Doctoral Researcher, Extended Reality for Smart Manufacturing

TUS Midlands Midwest, Athlone

Industry co-funded doctorate embedded with Boston Scientific in Ireland. Years one and two co-funded with the SFI Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing; years three and four with the Research Ireland ADAPT Centre. Supervised by Dr Niall Murray and Dr Conor Keighrey. Thesis submitted 2026.

  • Delivered four no-code XR authoring templates to the partner, from more than twelve builds forced by Unity, XRI and Meta SDK version churn.
  • Ran three studies with 75 industry practitioners across two manufacturing sites, under research ethics approval and enterprise data policy.
  • Built the measurement apparatus: in-application telemetry logging, multi-angle and 360 session capture, step-wise task load and usability instruments, and a curated multi-terabyte qualitative dataset.
  • Published at ACM IMX and ACM MMSys, and produced a state of the art device review, a transfer thesis and a commercial platform evaluation as partner deliverables.
  • Delivered hands-on workshops for mechanical engineering teams and supported capability transfer to a second site that procured the infrastructure independently.

Took handover of a multi-user XR broadcast authoring platform and advanced it towards demonstration readiness.

  • Implemented virtual studio lighting control, virtual camera output into a live production switcher, and WebSocket control of audio, scene transitions and on-screen graphics.
  • Resolved live video and audio synchronisation over NDI, and built out the virtual studio environment.
  • Configured a CERTH volumetric capture rig for two simultaneous captures with audio into Unity, and unit-tested the plugin integration.
  • Contributed to TG4 test preparation and to partner evaluation sessions with Trinity College Dublin and Satore Studio.

  • 2023: ITAG Excellence Awards category win, Galway. Boston Scientific Galway nominated the doctoral XR design review project and won its category.
  • 2016: global nominee, NASA Space Apps Challenge, for an open source virtual reality Mars simulator with custom haptic feedback hardware.
  • 2016: first prize, Google DevFest, for an augmented reality newspaper loading video, 3D models and dynamic content from printed image targets.
  • 2016: first prize, Marico Innovation Foundation and CAMTech diabetes hackathon, for a non-invasive glucometer concept that was subsequently incubated.
  • 2012: runner-up, International Space Settlement Design Competition, held at NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston.

Service and Outreach

  • Location lead, NASA Space Apps Challenge: organised HackAthlone in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and previously Space Apps Limerick in 2021 and Space Apps Vellore in 2017. Responsible for the pitch, budget, venue, judging panel and delivery.
  • TUS Engineering Expo: exhibited and demonstrated XR research in 2024 and 2025.
  • TUS Lego League and Code4Fun: supported both outreach programmes, including 3D printing support for participating teams.
  • Conference volunteering: Graphic Medicine Conference 2024, hosted at TUS.
  • Peer review: reviewer for a virtual reality research journal.
  • Supervision: co-op students on documentation, testing and onboarding material during the doctorate.

Interests

3D conceptualisation and rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, gesture and interaction design, and the long unglamorous question of why good tools go unused. Football, swimming and cooking, in roughly that order of competence.
